This qualitative explorative study aims:

  • to gain an information-rich insight into a generally unexplored and mostly hidden field of home care in Germany from the users’ point of view;
  • to analyse the perceptions and experiences of the safety of people living with severe illness and technology-dependency in private homes; and
  • to work out recommendations for developing and shaping patient-centred safety procedures and risk management strategies in High Tech Home Care (HTHC) and/or Home Mechanical Ventilation (HMV).

The main purpose of the research, with its in-depth, relational and reflexive approach, is to illuminate the subjective meaning, actions and context of ventilator-dependent patients and their informal caregivers in home care.
